Humility—it’s a word that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, especially in a world that often encourages us to put ourselves first. But in Philippians 2:1-11, Paul points us to the ultimate example of humility: Jesus. And let’s be honest, this kind of humility is something that can truly change the way we live.
Paul kicks off this passage by encouraging the Philippians to be united in their love and purpose. He’s calling them—and us—to live in a way that’s different from the world around us, to be of the same mind, having the same love, and being one in spirit and purpose. But how do we do that? By looking to Jesus.
Philippians 2:5-7 (CSB): “Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. Instead, he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity.”
Jesus, who had every reason to stay at the top, chose to come down to our level. He didn’t cling to His rights or status; instead, He let go of them to serve us. This kind of humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves—it’s about thinking of ourselves less and putting others first.
This passage challenges us to look at our own lives and ask, “Where can I be more like Jesus?” It’s easy to get caught up in looking out for ourselves, but Paul’s words remind us that true greatness is found in serving others, just as Jesus did.
Imagine how our communities, our relationships, and our world could change if we all chose to live this way. It’s not easy, but it’s the way of Jesus, and it’s a path that leads to real transformation.
Let’s pray: “Jesus, thank you for showing us what true humility looks like. Help us to follow your example and to serve others with the same love and grace that you’ve shown us. May our lives reflect your humility in all that we do. Amen.”
